The Audi R8 is a mid-engined sports car introduced by the German automaker Audi in 2007.

The first appearance of the car was in 2006, appearing at auto shows and events all over the world. The R8 is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform, as Audi has full ownership of subsidiary Lamborghini S.p.A.. Audi announced in 2005 that the name of the successful Audi R8 race car would be used for a new road car in 2007, the Audi R8, based on the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car, which was based on the earlier Audi RSQ concept vehicle, appearing at the 2003 Geneva Auto Show and 2003 International Motor Show. The R8 was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show on 30 September 2006. There is some confusion with the name which the car shares with the Le Mans winning R8 LMP. Originally, many thought the car would be called the R9 (as there is a gap in numbering left when Audi announced the R8's successor, the diesel-powered R10).

Pricing for the R8 model starts at around €88,000, although in Ireland, due to high VRT the base price of the R8 is about €160,000. The base price in the US is $109,000.

The Audi R8 is equipped with a 4.2 L FSI V8 developing 420 PS (414 hp/309 kW), the same engine used in the B7 Audi RS4.

The transmission is either a manual gearbox with metal gate, or a "R-tronic" gearbox (single-clutch robotic gearbox). These options are the same that are available on the Lamborghini Gallardo. A double clutch gearbox (DSG, S-tronic) is not currently (as of January 2008) available.

The R8 has a dry weight of 1560 kg (3439 lb). Its suspension utilizes magneto rheological dampers.

As Audi AG owns Lamborghini (Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.), 15% of the R8 is shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo, including the transmission and chassis. The R8 is made distinct by its exterior styling, cabin, engine, and pricing.

The Audi R8 also features an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, and Carbon-Ceramic composite brakes with monobloc Brembo calipers on all four wheels.

2011 BMW M3

It's almost springtime. For some people that means flowers, rain, new life and all that sappy stuff. I would probably drive past the new foliage and bird-watchers though, because your local BMW dealership will probably have a new M3 on the lot, featuring the 2011 BMW M3 "Competition Package."  Available in Spring of 2010, this add on will be available for all models (Coupe, Sedan, Convertible) and will cost $2,500.

 It includes lightweight alloy wheels, lowered suspension (10mm), trick looking carbon fiber front and rear spoilers, and a new EDC setting simply called, "sport mode." Along with that wildly creative EDC setting comes several new stability control programs, all aimed at improving the handling and driving experience. The aero bits look great. The raw carbon fiber accents the body color (unless it's black) and will help the car stand out among the seemingly thousands of new M3s seen daily. The rear spoiler is a nice touch, elongating the shape of the truAt first glance this seems like a way for BMW to squeak more money from it's loyal followers. But, and it's a big "but", BMW is claiming this is the best handling "M" car ever built. That is a statement that requires you to have 80lb moon rocks in your yam-bag. The best handling M car ever? Somewhere, an E30 owner just died of preposterous insult-induced cardiac arrest. I admit I am skeptical. With all the automakers fighting for customers and sales right now, they would go pretty far to bring in the buyers. But I hope BMW has more integrity than that, and that this is indeed a true fact. Because if it proves to be true, we may be looking at the best M3 yet, and possibly the best BMW to date. Let's hope the 2011 BMW M3 Competition Package can live up to the monumental hype.nk and balancing the profile.

More Room, More Utility, More Fun in the Latest “True” MINI:

Stretching the wheelbase nearly nine and a half inches in comparison to the MINI Hardtop significantly enhances interior room and utility, as well as driver/passenger comfort and convenience for those who want more of this iconic British brand. And – in true MINI fashion – mixing the traditional with the modern results in both the car’s unmistakably MINI appearance and unique ways to access this interior: The tailgate carries forward the twin, outwardly hinged “Split Rear Barn Doors” found on the Clubman’s ancestors, while rear-seat passenger ingress and egress is eased through the rear-hinged “Clubdoor” incorporated in the car’s right side.

The 2010 MINI Cooper Clubman mirrors the latest MINI Cooper hardtop – both inside and out, in terms of equipment – from the radiator grill to the B pillars. This means the two variants share the 172-horsepower turbocharged engine of the MINI Cooper S and the 118-hp, naturally aspirated four-cylinder powerplant of the MINI Cooper, both driving the front wheels. Inside, the instrument panel, seats (with the exception of some upholstery colors and materials as well as interior trim colors), comfort and convenience features and switch gear that have already been made familiar. And they share the chassis components, as well as the soul, which have earned the MINI accolades on its fun-to-drive, go-kart-like handling characteristics.

Exclusive to the MINI Clubman is the area behind the front seats and the number of doors providing access to the interior. Stretching the Clubman 9.4 inches and the wheelbase 3.2 inches results in a very different environment for passengers and all of life’s precious cargo. Almost all of the extra wheelbase is translated into additional leg room for rear passengers, and the revised body work provides a bit more shoulder room for them as well. The most dramatic transformation comes in terms of luggage space: the Clubman offers 61 percent more space (9.18 versus 5.7 cubic feet) with the rear seats up, or 37 percent more (32.8 versus 24 cubic feet) with both seats folded. And the Clubman offers an optional flat-luggage-floor system which also brings a covered storage bin between the Split Rear Barn Doors and the seatbacks.

Those rear split-doors offer the most striking visual differentiator for the Clubman from the MINI Hardtop. In keeping with the marque’s heritage, the 2010 MINI Clubman’s rear look is modeled along the design of the rear doors found in the Austin Mini Countryman, Morris Minor Traveller and the Mini Clubman Estate from the 1960s. The MINI Clubman eschews the more common hatch for a pair of Split Rear Barn Doors hinged on the outer edge of the C-pillars, thus providing a wide, open access to the luggage area. Opening/closing operation of the doors is very specific: the right, or main, door must be opened prior to the left one (and closed in reverse order) and the doors effortlessly glide open with the aid of a pair of gas struts.

A similar sequential operation allows for the opening/closing of the Clubdoor which provides a more convenient means for rear passengers to enter or leave the MINI Clubman cabin. Hinged at the rear on the right side, the Clubdoor is integrated into the right-side B-pillar. Compared to the MINI hardtop, with the Clubdoor open, passengers have four times more space to enter the rear seats of the Clubman (when the front seat is in the easy-entry position).

Once inside, all four occupants have their own three-point seatbelts and are further protected by six standard airbags. Strong, stable body construction provides the MINI Clubman with a platform for a high level of crash protection. In the event of a collision, optimized load paths within the body structure serve to effectively divert forces acting on the car, despite the short overhangs front and rear.

Active safety is enhanced in critical driving situations by the standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Corner Brake Control (CBC) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), standard on both Clubman models. Additionally, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), a sportier mode of DSC, is optional on both models.

The Brake Assist on both models detects emergency operation of the brakes and builds up maximum brake pressure very quickly. MINI’s Hill Assist start-off assistance is featured in conjunction with DSC. The system continues to hold the brakes for a maximum of three seconds after letting off the brake pedal and before the clutch is engaged. This feature is beneficial when setting off on an uphill gradient to prevent the car from rolling back.

Driving Fun Remains Centerpiece of MINI Clubman’s Mission

A low center of gravity, wide track and the wheels moved to the extreme corners of the car guarantee agile and nimble driving behavior. The structure of the body shell, beyond providing the basis for superior crash protection in this segment, creates a solid platform for the suspension pieces. The front suspension features MacPherson-type springs over struts, ensuring excellent wheel guidance, keeping the steering smooth and responsive, and remain unaffected by engine power both in accelerating or braking. The five-link central-arm rear axle offers optimum road contact, again regardless of conditions.

Compared with the MINI Cooper Clubman, the MINI Cooper S Clubman has a more sporting suspension, and as an option, both models are available with sports suspension for an even higher standard of driving enjoyment.

The EPS (Electrical Power Steering) helps to make the MINI Clubman even more nimble and agile on the road. Speed-related assistance ensures low steering forces when parking and precise control at high speeds. In conjunction with the standard Sport button, EPS even offers a special sport mode specifically increasing steering feedback for an even more direct driving experience.

The two four-cylinder engines carried over from the hardtops provide the performance to enhance the driving experience. The turbocharged 1.6-liter version in the Cooper S Clubman produces 172 horsepower, eclipsing the magical “100-hp-per-liter” measure revered by enthusiasts. This translates into zero-to-60-miles-per-hour acceleration in 7.0 seconds and the same top speed, 139 miles per hour, as the six-speed manual hardtop version. The naturally-aspirated engine in the Cooper Clubman, also 1.6 liters, features variable valve control and accelerates this agile athlete to 60 mph in 8.9 seconds with a top speed of 125 mph.

These engines are designed for overall efficiency, which means high performance, low weight, low emissions and very competitive fuel economy. Both MINI Clubman models offer superior fuel economy, with the MINI Cooper S Clubman having 2010 fuel economy ratings of 34 mpg Highway, 26 mpg City and a combined rating of 29 mpg. The MINI Cooper Clubman is even more efficient with preliminary ratings of 36 mpg Highway, 28 mpg City and 32 mpg combined.

Composite – instead of conventional cast – camshafts and a weight-optimized crankshaft are part of the lightweight concept of the aluminum alloy power units. Fuel consumption, in turn, is optimized by a volume flow-controlled oil pump and an electronically controlled water pump for the coolant circuit – two technical features previously limited to larger and more expensive model segments.

The MINI Cooper Clubman and the MINI Cooper S Clubman both come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but can be ordered with an optional six-speed automatic transmission controlled by either a console-mounted selector, or on the Cooper S, with Formula 1-style steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Here you are, the winner for Best Sports Car of 2010 for $40-50,000 is the Nissan 370 Nismo. Honestly, once I found out how much this car cost, it didn't take me that long to put it at the top. This has so much going for it I couldn't believe my eyes. First, with all the options it barely crosses the $40,000 line, so it's cheaper than anything on this list. The 3.7 liter V6 makes 350hp (up 18 from the stock Z), takes the car to 60mph in 4.5 seconds, yet also gets 18/26mpg city/highway. Power goes through a 6 speed manual, equipped with Nissan's new “SynchroRev Match”, meaning you'll never botch a down-shift. If you prefer pure heal-and-toeing, you can turn it off. It also comes with upgraded brakes, springs, shocks, sway bars and an LDS, a must have for an true driver's car. The upgrades mean the car will just as easily apex the corner as it will drift it. You set the dial for what type of fun you want, and it delivers.The interior is accented with colored stitching and well-placed Nismo badges, yet overall it's driver-focused and uncluttered. The high-backed seats hold you in place, and the fit and finish is great. It's classy without being boring, exactly what you want in a performance car. Outside is a classic coupe: long hood, short deck, curvy hips and shoulders led by a cunning face. It is a true sports car. It has all required genes and just does the right things. But most importantly you feel connected to it. You don't want a car that can happily drive to the store, you want one the makes you feel more awake the moment you grab the shifter. It has the “it factor.” It is more than that sum of its parts.

 When we made this list we graded the sports cars on their strengths, and how those attributes might influence us as buyers. For example, the Evo MR Touring is one of the best performing and multi-functional 4-doors out there, regardless of price, but a true driver's car has only 2 doors. The 135i has great potential, but out of the box it's a little soft and frankly, needs a makeover. And the TTS is AWD, giving it a slightly clinical feel, and that means it's just not quite as much fun. The 370Z is what a performance car is meant to be. It's a little rough in a parking lot, and your mom might say it's too bumpy, but it will suck up the bumps and stick like tar. When you are ripping out downshifts and linking turns, getting only as much over-steer as you ask for, you will know you spent $50,000 in the best way possible.

The 2011 Ford Mustang GT arrives with an all-new 5.0-liter V-8 engine, developed by a passionate team of engineers who rallied around the common goal of delivering more than 400 horsepower along with best-in-class fuel economy and driving fun.

Complementing those goals, a pair of new six-speed transmissions – one manual and one automatic – take advantage of the flexibility and fuel economy benefits of having six forward ratios, helping Mustang GT give powerful launches while also delivering relaxed cruising with exceptional fuel economy.

Chassis enhancements help improve the outstanding balance and driving behavior Mustang owners expect. Damper tuning and spring rates were revised to provide a smooth highway ride, while new rear lower control arms and firmer stabilizer bar bushings improve stiffness and handling for better cornering response over the highly praised 2010 model.

"The overall refinements to Mustang are really brought to life by its new engine," said David Pericak, Mustang chief nameplate engineer. "The car benefits from better handling, better braking and more refinement, and now it's powered by a high-tech 5.0-liter V-8 that Mustang enthusiasts and new customers alike are going to love."

Rebirth of the 5.0

The modern 5.0-liter four-valve Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) V-8 engine in the new Mustang GT will deliver 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque. At the same time, fuel economy is projected to be better than the previous model and unsurpassed in the segment.

"This all-new 5.0-liter engine is the next chapter in the development of the world-class Mustang powertrain portfolio," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. "It's a thoroughly modern engine for the times, delivering the performance and fun-to-drive factor that enthusiasts want, while improving fuel economy."

The six-speed automatic transmission in the 2011 Mustang GT will deliver fuel economy of 25 mpg highway and 18 city. This is up from 23 mpg highway and 17 city for the 2010 model. Six-speed manual transmission Mustang GT models for 2011 are projected to deliver 26 mpg highway and 17 city, matching the 2010 model but delivering significantly more horsepower and performance feel.

2011 Mustang GT fuel economy is enabled by Ti-VCT, the six-speed transmissions in automatic or manual variation, EPAS, additional tire spats and a rear decklid seal to enhance aerodynamics.

All-new aluminum four-valve-per-cylinder heads feature a compact roller-finger follower valvetrain layout leaving more room for high-flow ports for free-breathing performance. Head structure was designed to support higher cylinder head pressures and cross-flow cooling for sustained high-rpm use. Head bolt size was increased from 11 to 12 millimeters to contain the higher combustion pressures.

The aluminum block was developed for optimized windage and oil drainback under lateral conditions and high-rpm use, such as a track-day outing for an enthusiast owner or driver. Increased main bearing bulkhead widths and nodular iron cross-bolted main bearing caps with upsized bolts were also employed to accommodate the significant performance increase.

An additional element is the increased capacity and baffling of the deep-sump stamped steel oil pan to enable sustained high-rpm use and offer the convenience of 10,000-mile oil change intervals. Piston-cooling jets also were incorporated for performance-minded customers and for faster oil warm-up on cold start.

Specially designed tubular exhaust headers were developed to maximize exhaust pulse separation and improve flow. A team analyst actually fabricated the tubular headers in his home workshop, bringing the CAE design to life.

Engineers also made sure all their hard work wasn't disguised under the hood. Curved intake runners are framed by an acoustic cover sporting the new 5.0 logo, while "Powered by Ford" cam covers crown the tops of the cylinder banks. The effect is perfectly suited for a purpose-built performance machine like the new 5.0-liter V-8.

Transmission and powertrain improvements

Mustang GT drivers who prefer a manual gearbox will enjoy the short throws and direct feel of the shifter along with the relaxed cruising permitted by the extra top gear ratio.

Customers choosing the automatic will be pleasantly surprised to find the advanced six-speed transmission does not sacrifice fuel economy or performance – delivering crisp, quick shifts.

The automatic transmission also features a grade-assist or "hill mode" to improve drivability on hilly terrain. This technical innovation uses vehicle input – acceleration, pedal position, vehicle speed and brake status – to automatically determine the correct gear ratio while on an incline or decline. Hill mode eliminates sixth gear, extends lower gear operation on uphill climbs, and provides additional grade or engine braking for coast-downs.

The standard 3.31 (manual) and 3.15 (automatic) rear axle ratios provide an ideal blend of cruising fuel economy and acceleration, aided by the wide ratio spread permitted through the use of six forward speeds in the gearboxes. A standard limited-slip axle helps distribute the new engine's power between both rear wheels for maximum traction in all conditions.

A new era in Mustang driving dynamics

Electric Power Assist Steering has made a dramatic contribution to Mustang GT driving dynamics, delivering quicker on-center steering response, increased effort at highway speeds and reduced effort required in low-speed parking maneuvers. Because the belt-driven power steering pump is eliminated, EPAS provides a quieter vehicle with fewer components drawing engine power.

EPAS also enables new technologies that adjust for minor driving annoyances. Drift-Pull Compensation adjusts the steering to correct for crosswinds and minor road crowning, while Active Nibble Control helps eliminate the "shimmy" felt at high speeds when a wheel is out of balance or a brake rotor is warped. Both conditions are alleviated by EPAS independent of driver input, helping ensure Mustang delivers a smooth, comfortable driving experience.

Standard AdvanceTrac® Electronic Stability Control, which complements the all-speed traction control and standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), helps keep the car under control in all driving conditions.

The 2011 Mustang GT features enhanced rear lower control arms to add stiffness, improve powertrain NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) control and sharpen handling. A stiffened rear stabilizer bar for better on-center steering is also included. Stabilizer bar diameters, spring rates and dampers all have been tuned for improved dynamics.

A Brembo brake package upgrade will be available for serious enthusiasts. This package includes 14-inch vented front discs from the Shelby GT500®, unique 19-inch alloy wheels and summer performance tires.

Structural enhancements for NVH control, handling and safety For 2011, Mustang GT benefits from across-the-board NVH improvements. These include additional sound-deadening material on both sides of the instrument panel and a rear wheel arch liner to reduce noise on gravel or wet surfaces.

Mustang GT convertible models feature enhanced structural rigidity, with lateral stiffness improved by 12 percent versus the 2010 model. A tower-to-tower front strut brace is now standard, and the V-brace has been stiffened by adding gussets. The secondary crossmember also has been stiffened while a front Z-brace has been added, connecting primary and secondary crossmembers. A-pillar stiffening foam also has been added to increase rigidity.

Improvements in body stiffness contribute to the coupe and convertible's driving performance and have a parallel benefit in accident protection. A stiff vehicle structure like that found on Mustang helps protect the cabin from deformation and intrusion in an impact.

Mustang also uses high-strength steel in its body structure and ultra-high-strength steel in the door intrusion beams for additional side-impact protection.

CHICAGO – The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 debuted today at the Chicago Auto Show. It is the highest-performing Camaro and the most technically advanced car ever developed in its class. The new ZL1 continues the momentum of Camaro, propelling it into an entirely new realm of leading-edge performance technology. It is planned to launch at the beginning of 2012.

Motivated by a supercharged V-8 engine producing an estimated 550 horsepower (410 kW), the Camaro ZL1 will be the fastest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet. And more than just power, the ZL1 features technologically advanced and highly developed chassis and suspension systems that help it deliver balanced, track-ready handling and braking power to complement its high engine output. Rigorous development of the ZL1 is ongoing, and official estimates of the car's capabilities will be released later in 2011, as testing nears completion.

"Camaro ZL1 is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously," said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "It's the most technically advanced Camaro ever, so we've chosen a name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history."

The ZL1 name is derived from the all-aluminum racing engine of the same name, which was developed in the late 1960s and installed into a handful of regular-production 1969 Camaros. Only 69 were built with the engine, but they've achieved mythical status among enthusiasts, as they represented the pinnacle in Camaro performance – until now. The 2012 ZL1 model is designed to be a major leap forward for the Camaro, bringing a new level of performance capability to the segment.

The central goal of the car's development was creating something new – a Camaro intended to reach optimal lap times on top road-racing circuits and excellent driving dynamics on the street. To achieve that goal, engineers evolved many of the existing Camaro's systems, as well as incorporated new technologies such as electric power steering and Magnetic Ride Control, the world's fastest-reacting suspension system.

Camaro ZL1's design communicates and supports its performance mission. Rather than using decorative elements, ZL1 is visually differentiated from other current Camaro models with elements vital to the car's elevated capabilities.

"Everything about the ZL1's design is directly related to its technology and serious performance, especially aerodynamics," said Ed Welburn, vice president, Global Design. "Our designers' goal was to execute that function-oriented design with beautifully sculpted forms, creating an imposing, powerful persona. Function becomes the aesthetic. The intent is a car that delivers on the attitude it projects."

Major elements of the ZL1's design are a new front fascia and hood with air extractors, designed in tandem to create aerodynamic downforce to aid handling. The car's hood includes a signature center section constructed of carbon fiber and rendered in satin black finish. New rocker panels, wide tires, 20-inch wheels and exhaust tips portray the car's handling and power. The ZL1 badge appears on the grille, hood and the brake calipers, all key areas portraying the technology within.

Tech overview Supporting the dynamic track and street performance of the ZL1 is the LSA 6.2L supercharged engine, which will produce an estimated 550 horsepower (410kW) and 550 lb.-ft. of torque (677 Nm), with specific features for the Camaro. Built on GM's legendary all-aluminum, small-block V-8 architecture, the LSA features an intercooled supercharger system, premium heat-resistant aluminum-alloy cylinder heads and other details designed to ensure its exceptional performance is delivered with smoothness and refinement. Because the Camaro ZL1 uses electric power steering, the engine does not incorporate a conventional hydraulic power steering pump on its accessory drive system. This enhances performance, because no engine power is used to turn a steering pump pulley. Camaro ZL1 is a complete high-performance car, not just a Camaro with more power. Key technical highlights include:

Transmission – The high-performance Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual is matched with the LSA engine. It is the "MG9" version of the transmission, with a higher torque capacity. It is used with a dual-mass flywheel and twin-disc clutch for easy operation and shift smoothness. A new, shorter-throw shifter actuates the gear changes.

Exhaust – ZL1 is equipped with a dual-mode exhaust system, which alters the sound level and character in response to engine rpm. First used on the legendary Corvette, and specifically tuned for Camaro ZL1, the dual-mode exhaust will give the car a signature sound.

Drivetrain – It is revised with a stronger driveshaft and rear axle system, featuring a larger and stronger cast iron differential housing, stronger axles and heavy-duty limited-slip differential. This patent-pending system is designed to ensure that ZL1's tremendous power is delivered smoothly to the ground.

Suspension – The suspension features completely revised tuning and the inclusion of segment-exclusive Magnetic Ride Control. ZL1's Magnetic Ride system will include driver selectable modes (Tour and Sport) tailored for the preferred style of driving. It uses advanced magneto-rheological science to produce shock damping with the highest level of precision, enabling body control optimized for excellent performance in everyday driving as well as track situations. This technology appears on only a small roster of some of the world's finest performance cars. Other chassis elements are redesigned to support the car's high-performance limits. Rear stabilizer bars have drop links repositioned outboard of the control arms. This makes the bars more effective in controlling body roll in turns, with crisp response to driver commands.
